West Indian Parade Began with Mass in Crown Heights

For Catholics in Crown Heights, the annual celebration of the West Indian Festival, held annually on Labor Day, began with Mass celebrated at St. Matthew’s Church. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio was the main celebrant. He was joined on the altar by Auxiliary Bishop Neil Tiedemann, the newly appointed coordinator of ministry to black Catholics and people from the Caribbean; retired Auxiliary Bishop Guy Sansaricq; and priests who either were born in the Caribbean or serve those who live here.
