Wake-Up Call On Vocations

Dear Editor: In his Sunday’s Scriptures column, “Embracing Our Vocations Brings True Happiness” (Jan. 17), Father Robert Powers “wishes that we prayed more often that every baptized person discern and respond to the vocation or vocations to which God is calling him.”

In response, I would like to applaud Father Powers. In the Scripture passage (1 Samuel 3:3b, 10-1), we hear Jesus calling Samuel (and us) by name to our vocation to get up, get ready and follow Jesus.

Samuel was personally transformed through his immediate response to get up and follow Jesus. Each of us is called by Jesus through our Baptism to make God’s love visible in the world.

Father Powers’ message is a wake-up call that we are all asked to stay attune to the voice of Jesus who has a special design for us to collaborate with him in bringing God’s mercy to the voiceless.

Are we listening?
