The Trust of the Faithful

Dear Editor: As a start (Newspapers Examine U.S. Bishops’ Responses to Abuse Allegations, The Tablet, Nov. 10), I’d like to make three suggestions for how bishops can begin to regain the trust of the faithful:

Acknowledge and ask for forgiveness for how you have sinned against the People of God: the victims of abuse, their families, the parishioners, and your brother priests.

Truly repent for your actions and stop speaking as though you were the victims in this crisis.

Make changes in the Church structure that makes everyone in the Church, including yourselves, responsible to one another. This means including women at the highest levels of the decision-making processes of the Church as full participants and not observers.
