Fontbonne Wins Division II BQ Championship

Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, was crowned Brooklyn/Queens Division II champions March 3 with a 39-38 victory over Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, at Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village.

Junior guard Cindy Henderson paced the Bonnies with 13 points in the win. Despite waking up that morning with a 101-degree fever, junior guard Siohban Sammon added 11 points, bringing up similarities to NBA great Michael Jordan’s famous “flu game” of the 1997 NBA Finals when he scored 38 points after resting most of that day.

After Henderson hit an off-balance two-pointer to tie the game, Fontbonne center Michelle Moran controlled the rebound on Henderson’s free-throw miss. Moran made one-of-two free-throws to give the Bonnies the lead to stay.

The Bonnies fell in the Division II city championship, 38-29, March 9 to Preston H.S., the Bronx. Fontbonne closed out the season as the No. 4 ranked non-AA team in the city.
