The ordaining bishop has the Book of the Gospels in his hands and the new deacon kneels before him to receive it. As the bishop hands over the Book of the Gospels, he says these words, “Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you now are. Believe what you read, teach what you believe and practice what you teach.”
