Dear Editor: I write to thank you for your very kind and thoughtful Editor’s Space about my beloved uncle Howard B. Basler (Howie). My father, Joseph Basler, has taken great comfort in all the nice things that have been said, and now written, about his brother. They have been deeply appreciated at the difficult time.
A Mass of Christian burial for Msgr. Howard Basler, former director of the Social Action Dept. of Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, was celebrated Oct. 17 at St. Ephrem’s Church, Dyker Heights.
Msgr. Howard Basler, who died last week, was an outstanding priest. He was a priest who was thinking outside the box long before anyone ever heard of that phrase. He was something of a Renaissance man. He loved to read, to discuss new ideas, to watch the Mets and to be around his friends. He fully understood that before he could be a good priest, he had to be a good person. He was both.
