The Perils of ‘Preferred Peers’

ON CATHOLIC CAMPUSES that aspire to Top Ten or Top Twenty status in publicity sweepstakes like the U.S. News and World Report college rankings, one sometimes hears the phrase “preferred peers.” Translated into plain English from faux-sociologese, that means the schools to which we’d like to be compared (and be ranked with).

Schools Socked Again!

Dear Editor: Hope springs eternal, but frankly, I am not surprised that the school tax credit was again denied in Albany. This case is hopeless because we have a liberal government which legalized same-sex marriage and is more interested in forcing the acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle on everybody than the religious and moral education of our children.

Catholic Schools, Students Lose Again

Last week’s decision by the New York State Legislature not to include the proposed Education Tax Credit in the state budget was a blow to Catholic schools in New York. It’s likely that more schools will have to close. It’s definite that fewer students will be offered scholarship money.

Dear Editor: Thank you for the informative death notice about Dr. Robert Muccigrosso (May 23). I wish to shed some light on Robert Muccigrosso, the man. Bob, as the assistant principal at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, hired me to teach at the school in August of 1973. That began 42 years of mentorship and great friendship.
