Last week, I told you about the first Bishop of Brooklyn as his remains were brought back to the diocese. Along with Bishop John Loughlin, the diocese’s second bishop, Charles E. McDonnell, was also moved to the bishops’ crypt in Douglaston.
Brooklyn’s newest auxiliary bishop was welcomed back to the diocese Aug. 4 with a Mass of thanksgiving and reception at the Immaculate Conception Pastoral Center in Douglaston, Queens.
Every summer, about 80 priests from around the world visit the diocese to cover for local priests, who go on vacation. “But don’t think you are just here to fill in.”

When Pope Francis made his way to the Campus Misericordiae (Field of Mercy) vigil site at Brzegi, Poland, he was a welcome sight. To and from the field, the World Youth Day pilgrims had walked around 11 miles.
“Once the pope came out everyone’s spirits lifted up,” Goncalves said. “They ran to the gate to see a glimpse of him. Everyone wanted to be part of it.”
