Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio conducted the Rite of Election, welcoming almost 1,100 new members of the Catholic Church, at the former Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope, on Sunday, Feb. 22. During the ceremony, which was held in two sessions, the bishop personally greeted each catechumen or candidate for the sacraments and the community pledged to support […]

More and More People Are Joining the Church
While Christians around the world continue to face persecution for their faith, large numbers of Americans continue to flock to the Catholic Church.
This Easter, parishes in Brooklyn and Queens will welcome almost 1,100 new members to their congregations. These men and women who wish to join the Church have been preparing with weekly lessons for the past several months through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program.
Support the Diocese’s Good Works
As the Lenten season begins, I reach out to you, the faithful of Brooklyn and Queens, to ask your assistance in supporting the ministries of the Diocese of Brooklyn through a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. On behalf of those we serve in our diocese, I take this time to thank you for your generous response to the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal and ask you to commit yourself to helping the Diocese reach our 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal goal.
Despite Fire, Parish Life Continues
When fire damaged Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Corona on Jan. 5, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio was one of the first on the scene to inspect the site. He returned last weekend to celebrate Mass with the parish community and encourage their efforts to rebuild. “I wanted to just be here with the people at […]
There’s Danger in Distractions of Devil
As we begin the season of Lent, the Rite of Election on the first Sunday of Lent is perhaps one of the highlights of the Liturgical Year in the Diocese of Brooklyn. For those who are to be Baptized and fully initiated on Easter, their journey begins in earnest during this 40-day period.
Lenten Regulations
In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, would like to remind us of these obligations.
Be of Strong Heart During Lent
The season of Lent is the time when we are asked to firm up our faith, when we are to give special attention to training our will so that we can love God all the more.
A Call to Prophecy in Consecrated Life with slideshow
Celebrating the World Day for Consecrated Life during the Year for Consecrated Life, the bishop of the diocese told those who dedicated their lives to Jesus and His Church that they must be like prophets. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio referenced the first reading, DT 18:15-20, during his homily at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, Feb 1. […]
Waking Up the World
Last November, on the Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis declared a Year of Consecrated Life beginning on that day and to continue until Feb. 2, 2016, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. As a religious, Pope Francis understands, perhaps better than many, the gift of consecrated life to the Church, as well as the difficulties of leading a consecrated life in the world today.
Racial Divide Still Plagues Us
The current situation in our country, especially in the City of New York, brings to mind the question of racial and class divide in our society. I am grateful to my brother Bishop Edward Braxton, of Belleville, Ill., for his reflection on “The Racial Divide in the United States: A Reflection for the World Day of Peace 2015.”
