OLMC Parish Hits the Slopes

In honor of its 125th anniversary, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish, Williamsburg, has planned a variety of activities and events for each month of this historical celebration. In January, Msgr. Joseph P. Calise, pastor, took a group of 23 youth and adults to ski and snowboard at Belleayre Mountain, Pine Hill, N.Y.  It was an opportunity to meet new people and learn something new. Next weekend is the 46th annual Super Bowl — and the 22nd annual Souper Bowl of Caring through which people across the nation work to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. In 2011, over 260,000 youth participated, collecting more than $9.5 million and food for hunger-relief charities. It’s not too late to participate. Log onto www.souperbowl.org to learn more.

At their annual Christmas party, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5911 of St. Anastasia parish, Douglaston, collected toys, which were then donated to needy parishes around Queens.

Helping to organize the effort were Past Grand Knights, Joseph Stock, Martin Aversa and William P. Fitzgerald, pictured at left. All octogenarians, these gentlemen set a great example by devoting their days to serving others.

Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Academy, Flushing, honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by celebrating the second annual “I Have a Dream Day.” The day focused on Dr. King’s legacy of pursuing one’s dreams and living lives of respect for self and others. Students dressed in costumes to show the dreams they one day hope to achieve, such as becoming a doctor or police officer.

Quote of the Week: “To love God is something greater than to know Him.” — St. Thomas Aquinas (in honor of his feast day, Jan. 28)

Our Lady of Grace Pastoral Ministry, Gravesend, thanks all who made a donation to the indoor Nativity scene in December. A total of $770.80 (new total — up from $756.70 when The Tablet went to press!) was collected and used to buy supplies for the parish food pantry. The parish is especially grateful to Ed Radonic, music ministry director, who has designed and built the parish Nativity scene annually for the past 21 years.

This week’s Tip of the Tablet TALK Top Hat goes to the neighboring parishes of Good Shepherd and St. Columba, both Marine Park. When the Good Shepherd Catholic Club, under president Bill Faulkner, ran its annual Coat Drive this month, parishioners at the two churches contributed close to 500 coats, which were given out at shelters in Sheepshead Bay and CHIPS in Park Slope.

Don’t forget to have your throat blessed on Feb. 3, the Feast of St. Blaise!
