Attention, there is a telephone scam that is affecting senior citizens and immigrants in Brooklyn and Queens so much so that the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau has asked Tablet TALK to alert readers.
The scam is called the “Green Dot Card Scam,” and here’s how it unfolds:
You receive a phone call and are told that you owe money (to the IRS or for a utility bill) or that someone you know was in an accident and needs cash immediately.
The scammer tells you to go to a store, purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak Card and place a certain amount of money on the card. You are given a telephone number to call after you buy the card. When you call, the scammer asks for the serial number on the card, and then he or she can steal the money you put on it.
The NYPD is asking anyone with information about this scam to call their local precinct or 1-800-577-TIPS.
Remember, if you receive a call asking for any kind of payment using a Green Dot MoneyPak Card, it is a scam. Call the police.
