St. Edmund Welcomes Freshmen

Upperclassmen from St. Edmund Prep, Sheepshead Bay, continued the school’s tradition of welcoming the incoming freshmen. Members of the mentors program volunteered their time to make sure the freshmen had a positive start to their high school career. The mentors helped them find classrooms, open locks, get new books and navigate the hallways. The freshmen were treated to a free lunch in the cafeteria and made new friends that will, hopefully, last a lifetime.

Carmelites Celebrate Founder’s Day

In honor of Founder’s Day for the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirm, Auxiliary Bishop Paul Sanchez celebrated a Mass in the Queens Nursing Home. Sister Angeline was their foundress, and in June, 2012, Pope Benedict elevated her to venerable, which is her second step toward canonization. Immediately following the Founder’s Day Liturgy, Bishop Sanchez blessed the newly refurbished stained-glass windows that now enrich this sacred space. These renovations were completed in August. Seen above, from left, Bishop Sanchez; Sister Joseph Catherine, director; Sister Madeline Fasano; and Father Rodnev Lapommeray, with a resident, seated.

This week’s Tip of the Tablet Talk Top Hat goes to all the first responders who risked their lives by rushing into Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001 and to all those who continuously work to rebuild the buildings and the survivors’ lives. Some of their stories can be discovered in the 9/11 Living Memorial. The project tells the stories of survivors and those who helped them reach safety. More information can be found on http://voicesofseptember11.org.
