Empowering Youth to Help Heroes

Five eighth graders from Ave Maria Catholic Academy took top prize in a recent competition for creating Helping Heroes, a military care-package program. The Howard Beach crew beat 10 middle-school teams from across the city to win a yearlong partnership to expand their program with Project Empower, contest sponsor. The competition invited students to design and implement a nonprofit-style initiative addressing a real-world issue. Helping Heroes raised over $400 and sent more than 40 shoeboxes of toiletries to active duty military overseas. The winners, from left, are Gabriella Guida, Daniella Pepa, Katie Hennessy, Peter Barretta and Gaetano Modica. (Photo courtesy Gail Donovan.)
