Tablet All-Stars for H.S. Baseball, Softball

With another season of Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA baseball in the books, here’s a look at The Tablet’s 2012 All-Star team.

Special thanks to the league’s coaches for providing nominations. Each team features five infielders, four outfielders, two catchers and four pitchers.

Baseball First Team

Nelson Lopez, Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope — Junior, .391 batting average, 34 runs scored (led team), 45 hits (led team), six triples (led team), 24 RBI, 20 stolen bases (led team), named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Mitch Brigando, St. Edmund Prep, Sheepshead Bay — Junior, leadoff hitter, over .300 batting average, 15 multi-hit games, named Second Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Tom Hackimer, Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood — Senior, one regular season fielding error at shortstop, 62 at-bats, 11 runs scored, 12 hits, one double, eight RBIs, named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Eric Kalman, Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge — Senior, .422 batting average, .533 on-base percentage, 29 runs scored, 30 RBI, 18 stolen bases, will attend George Washington University, Washington, D.C., named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA, played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

Branley Torres, Bishop Ford — Senior, .341 batting average, 28 hits, seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBI, named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA, played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

William Garces, Bishop Ford — Senior, .392 batting average, 38 hits, nine doubles, four triples, 16 RBI, .528 on-base percentage, 27 runs scored, named Second Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA, played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

Chris Piteo, Archbishop Molloy — Junior, .340 batting average, 97 at-bats (led team), 32 runs scored, 33 hits, nine doubles, one triple, two home runs, 17 walks, 20 RBIs, .454 on-base percentage, named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Steven Pelan, St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows — Senior, leadoff hitter, .328 batting average, 14 stolen bases, six RBI, 22 runs scored (led team), will attend Molloy College, Rockville Centre, L.I.

Mike Guglielmi, Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst — Senior, threw out 80% of attempted base stealers, three-year varsity player, named First Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA, played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

Mark Maguire, Bishop Ford — Sophomore, 35 games, .402 batting average, 39 hits, 10 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 36 RBI, .537 on-base percentage, named Second Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Mike O’Dwyer, Archbishop Molloy — Senior, .323 batting average, 93 at-bats, 20 runs scored, 30 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 27 RBI, .402 on-base percentage, will attend Queens College, played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

Danny Pellegrino, St. Francis Prep — Senior, .315 batting average, two home runs, 18 RBI, eight stolen bases, one regular season fielding error at shortstop, will attend Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa., named Second Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Simeon Crookendale, Nazareth R.H.S., East Flatbush — Junior, .394 batting average (led team), 13 hits (led team), 15 runs scored (led team), 20 stolen bases (led team), stole four bases on April 24 at MCU Park, Coney Island, vs. Bay Ridge Prep

Vaughan Taylor, Msgr. McClancy — Sophomore, leadoff hitter, second on team in hitting and RBI, strong defensive outfielder

Matthew Chavez, Bishop Ford — Senior, .290 batting average, 22 runs scored, 31 hits, six doubles, three triples, 18 RBI, .423 on-base percentage

Keith Moore, Xaverian — Senior, .276 batting average, 21 RBI, 22 runs scored, 17 stolen bases, one fielding error in outfield

Frank Kaplan, Xaverian — Senior, 5-1 record, 1.89 ERA, 44 innings pitched, 40 strikeouts, named Second Team All-Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA

Blaise Scerbo, Xaverian — Senior, 3-0 record, 0.39 ERA, 36 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts, will attend Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J., played on CHSAA Mayor’s Cup team

Sean O’Melia, Msgr. McClancy — Senior, 4-2 record, 2.00 ERA, 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, winning pitcher in playoff game vs. Regis H.S., Manhattan, will attend St. Joseph’s College’s Brooklyn Campus

David Giacomino, Holy Cross — Senior, 5-3 record, 2.76 ERA, 51.2 innings pitched, only 12 walks all season, threw four complete games including playoff win against Molloy, will attend Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Honorable Mention

Brian Luebcke, Msgr. McClancy — Senior, Inf, team captain, .380 batting average, led team in RBI, 3-1 record as a pitcher, will attend St. Joseph’s College’s Brooklyn Campus

John Starace, Cathedral Prep, Elmhurst — Senior, Inf, .300 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, .354 slugging percentage, 10 RBI, 11 runs scored, hit over .600 in the playoffs

Edwin Vidal, St. John’s Prep, Astoria — Senior, C, .425 batting average, 20 hits, eight doubles, four triples, 20 RBI

Allison Gasparino, Bishop Kearney — Senior, co-captain, .530 batting average, two home runs, started three double plays from center field, Bishop Kearney team MVP

Amanda DiLeo, Bishop Kearney — Junior, co-captain, .567 batting average, threw out numerous baserunners, won Coach’s Award for the season

Stephanie Barbaro, Mary Louis — Senior, .425 batting average, 12 doubles (led team), 3-for-4 performance in playoff semifinal against St. Francis Prep, Mary Louis Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Mary Louis Scholar Athlete Award, will attend Adelphi University, Garden City, L.I.

Pitchers

Nicolette Trapani, Fontbonne — Sophomore, hit five home runs, struck out 12 batters in game vs. Mary Louis, threw four no-hit innings against St. Francis Prep, voted All-Brooklyn Softball Player of the Year

Gina Piro, Bishop Kearney — Junior, 19-3 record, threw a no-hitter this season

Victoria Goldbach, Archbishop Molloy — Senior, 12-1 record, winning pitcher in Brooklyn/Queens championship and N.Y.C. title, will attend Catholic University, Washington, D.C.

Shannon Minihane, Mary Louis — Senior, .385 batting average, three home runs, .925 fielding percentage (led team), won The Michael Kiefer Fire Fighter Memorial Award (Mary Louis highest award given to a senior demonstrating courage, sportsmanship and team work), Mary Louis Co-Defensive Player of the Year, will attend Mercyhurst University, Erie, Pa.

Sam Simon, Bishop Kearney — Junior, .604 batting average, team’s top defensive player

Kathleen Hachmeyer, St. Saviour — Senior, four-year varsity starter and leadoff hitter, .400 batting average, .500 on-base percentage

Dana Moss, Archbishop Molloy — Senior, .529 batting average, will attend L.I.U. Post, Brookville, L.I.

Maria Serrantino, Fontbonne —  Sophomore, .440 batting average, 12 runs scored, 22 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, .462 on-base percentage

Nicole Hadzovic, Bishop Kearney — Junior, .538 batting average, two defensive gems in the championship game

Christina Calascione, Fontbonne — Sophomore, .345 batting average, 14 runs scored, 19 hits, two doubles, 13 RBI, .471 on-base percentage, had two RBI and two runs scored in playoff win vs. Christ the King

Ashley Murrell, Bishop Loughlin — Senior, .300 batting average, leadoff hitter, team captain, won Bishop Loughlin Leadership Award

Briana Munoz, St. Edmund Prep — Junior, .300 batting average, strong-armed outfielder that prevented many sacrifice flies
