NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second straight year, the St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) baseball team has received a post-season berth and will head to Springfield, Illinois to compete in the 2014 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series.
Reaching the 20-win mark for the second straight season, the Bears (24-9) have earned the No. 6 seed for the 10-team, double-elimination tournament and will face No. 3 Penn State Greater Allegheny (28-9, 18-0 PSUAC) in their opening round matchup on Monday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. in Robin Roberts Stadium.
The Bears and Lions met in last year’s Small College World Series – the only meeting between the two squads – with the Lions prevailing 6-1 in the elimination matchup, winning five more games facing elimination before finishing as national runner up.
Tuesday’s second round matchups will pit the Bears against either No. 2 Lindenwood University-Belleville, No. 7 Selma University or No. 10 Robert Morris University Springfield.
Defending national champion University of Cincinnati Clermont has earned the overall No. 1 seed. The tournament will run from May 11-15 at Robin Roberts Stadium and Chamberlain Ballpark.
Winners of 13 of their last 14, the Bears will close out the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend facing Drew University on the road on Saturday and welcoming CCNY to James Madison High School on Sunday. Both twin bills will start at noon.
