St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) School, located in the vibrant and culturally diverse neighborhood of Astoria, is proud to be a caring “Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

During the 2014-2015 school year, SFA has been firmly committed to its school mission which is to develop within the community a “way of life” rooted in Christ and a Catholic vision that provides inspiration and identity to all of our members.

A school-wide effort continues to redesign instruction so that students are engaged in cognitively challenged tasks and actively involved in gaining mastery and proficiency of required skills necessary for success in postsecondary education and in the global arena. New programs introduced this year, including the Latin and Greek Roots Program and Classroom, Inc., as well as the teachers’ desire to advance their own learning are evident by the commitment to the school motto, “Success For All.” The school’s goal is to teach in such a way that the curriculum supports students’ strengths and helps them develop to their fullest potential. The school aims for students to have true intellectual grit with qualities like diligence, hard work, sustained effort and the ability to focus on a goal without getting discouraged by setbacks. As Angela Lee Duckworth said in September, 2013, during Education Leadership: “Grit is sticking with your future – day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years – and working really hard to make that future a reality.”

At SFA, the goal is to convince students that they can succeed, and support them in doing that! Technology tools are crucial to the success of all 21st-century learners. Therefore, SFA has developed a technology plan that will keep the school evolving in a modern Wi-Fi environment as competent and responsible users of innovative technology.

The school is very proud of the 2014 graduating class who received over $500,000 in high school scholarship awards.

During this school year, SFA chose “An Intelligent Heart Seeks Knowledge” as the school theme. Students are proud to partner with Shoes For All to help make sure everyone in NYC has a good pair of shoes to keep them warm this winter.
