Catholic Schools Week 2017

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy

Promoting Peace in Prospect/Lefferts Gardens

Located in the Prospect/Lefferts Gardens area of Flatbush, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy has educated children for more than 100 years in the Catholic tradition of excellence.

Students develop a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus through the academy’s Faith Formation Program, which comprises five interrelated components: Scripture, worship, doctrine, community and service. The intellectual, affective, social and physical spheres are woven together in the fabric of the whole person.

The school follows the N.Y.S. curriculum for the core subjects (math, ELA, science and social studies), and is committed to enhancing the educational program with physical education, art and music. The academy participates in the Performing Arts School Residency Program which teaches fourth graders film making, sixth graders play writing and producing, and eighth graders Shakespeare study and performance.

Students’ knowledge and talents are also displayed at the annual Science Fair, Oratorical Contest and Christmas and Spring shows. Faculty and staff run various afterschool clubs, including dance, basketball, baking, martial arts, and arts and crafts.

Technology is provided and updated to enhance the learning experience. A computer room with PCs provides students with a site for weekly technology classes. Classroom sets of iPads and Chromebooks are available to teachers, and classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards.
Students graduate equipped with strong study skills, time-management and note-taking techniques that prepare them for high school and college. Graduates who move onto Catholic high schools often receive scholarships.

The school’s staff consists of dedicated educators and is blessed with the continued presence of the Sisters of St. Joseph since the school opened in 1909. Dedicated to its patron, St. Francis of Assisi, peace education is integral to the school community. Students are instructed to act as peer mediators, and classes include a focus on conflict resolution and non-violent behavior. An outdoor Peace Garden is a reminder of the school community’s commitment to creating a peaceful society.

Tuition assistance is available through the Diocese of Brooklyn and the St. Francis of Assisi Alumni Scholarship Program.
