St. Edmund Eagles Taking Well to Water

Edmund rowing

St. Edmund Prep, Sheepshead Bay, is the first Catholic high school in New York City to offer a competitive rowing program. The co-ed crew team is made up eight student-athletes: seniors Kevin Llama, Anthony LiBassi and Martin Witkowski, juniors Benjamin Kelk, Tyler Reynolds and Shelby Lau, and sophomores Amanda Mattioli and Liana Sprance.

The team began intensive training this past March under the direction of coach Marice Love and in partnership with Row New York, an organization that combines competitive rowing with academic support in the New York area. Training includes indoor workouts on portable ergometers.

The first regatta was held April 22 on the Harlem River, and the team is gearing up for its May 29 regatta on Meadow Lake. This fall, the team will begin competing in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing League.
