Spotlight on Newark, N.J. (with slideshow)

Sacred Heart Cathedral-Basilica in Newark, N.J., was the setting for the first beatification ceremony in the U.S. on Saturday, Oct. 4 when Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, S.C., was ranked among the Blesseds. Above, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, a native of Newark, got a chance to renew old acquaintances. At right, Paterson, N.J., Bishop Arthur Serratelli preached the homily from the ornate pulpit beneath stunning stained-glass windows. Below, the attending bishops were led by Newark Archbishop John J. Myers, right, and Coadjutor-Bishop Bernard A. Hebda. Second from left is Bishop DiMarzio.
