Sports Round-Up Sept. 3

The Dominic A. Murray Memorial Foundation will host its eighth annual Red Gala on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach. Help support the mission to prevent sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and death in young people. Dominic Murray was a standout basketball player at Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, who died from SCA. Leo Keegan, a former basketball player at both St. Francis Prep, Williamsburg, and St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, passed away Aug. 22 at the age of 89.

The devoted husband to Joan and father of 12 children was a member of the Terriers team that pulled off an improbable win over heavily favored St. John’s University, Jamaica, on Jan. 28, 1954.

Keegan, a U.S. Army veteran, later settled in Levittown, L.I., and was a parishioner at St. James, Seaford, L.I., for more than 60 years while helping to establish the parish’s Catholic Youth Organization.
