Sports Round-Up Oct. 8

>>Red Storm’s Hoop Fundraiser

The St. John’s University, Jamaica, men’s and women’s basketball programs hosted the 12th annual Dribble for Victory Over Cancer on Sept. 24, raising nearly $50,000 to help fight childhood cancers. Proceeds support the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

>>Steeler Great

Father Ed Kachurka, pastor of St. Gregory the Great, Bellerose, and undoubtedly the most passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan among diocesan clergy, enjoyed the thrill of a lifetime just as football season kicked off.

He got to meet Pro Football Hall of Famer and Steelers legend Jerome Bettis at 388 restaurant
in Williston Park, L.I. The two enjoyed some good football talk, and of course, Father Kachurka mentioned the signed Bettis jersey in his living room.

Bettis, affectionately nicknamed “The Bus,” was a six-time Pro Bowler who rushed for 13,664 yards and 91 touchdowns in his 13- year NFL career.

>>Memorial Run

For the 34th year, Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, hosted the annual P.O. Christopher Hoban Memorial 5-Mile Run on Sept. 18. Volunteers from the St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the Admissions Office contributed to another great event.

The race celebrates the sacrifice of Police Officer Hoban, a 1980 graduate of Xaverian who was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 18, 1988 during an undercover narcotics operation buy-and-bust. He was 26 years old.
