Sports Round-Up Oct. 30

The sophomore cross-country team from Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, captured the Brooklyn-Queens GCHSAA championship on Oct. 13 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Sophomore Leni Montesdeoca from The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, placed first overall as an individual runner.

Some high-profile college basketball coaches made sure to give back for Catholic Education. At the annual Futures in Education fundraiser to support local Catholic schools, the auction featured items donated by notable NCAA coaches.

Villanova University head men’s basketball coach Jay Wright and University of Kentucky head men’s basketball coach John Calipari – a daily communicant – each donated a signed basketball. St. John’s University, Jamaica, head men’s hoops coach Mike Anderson and associate head coach Van Macon will play a round of golf with the highest bidders next spring at Cherry Valley Country Club, Garden City, L.I.

All proceeds benefit Catholic education in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Two local hoops products have made it through their first NBA training camps. Both Jose Alvarado and Justin Champagnie signed two-way contracts this past summer with the New Orleans Pelicans and Toronto Raptors, respectively.

A 6-foot guard, Alvarado played Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) ball at St. Ann, Flushing, before starring at Christ the King H.S., Middle Village. Champagnie, a 6-foot-6-inch guard/forward, started his basketball career in CYO for Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dyker Heights, before suiting up for Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene.

For these players, a two-way contract means that they will spend time in both the NBA and the G-League, the NBA’s minor league basketball organization.
