Julian Champagnie, a freshman on the St. John’s University, Jamaica, men’s basketball team, was named All-Met Rookie of the Year by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. The graduate of Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene, averaged 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game en route to becoming the 13th player in program history to earn the honor.
Local coaches and former athletes of all levels recently took to Twitter using the hashtag #TeamNewYork to continue to spread the message for New Yorkers to stay home in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Former New York Mets pitcher and Brooklyn’s own John Franco; St. John’s University, Jamaica, men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson and women’s basketball coach Joe Tartamella; and St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, men’s basketball coach Glenn Braica and women’s basketball coach Linda Cimino all supported the cause.
Additionally, local varsity CHSAA high school basketball coaches Dan Wiatre (St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay), Anthony Olszewski (Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst) and John Kiggins (St. John’s Prep, Astoria) were among the many to widely share the hashtag to promote Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s stay-at-home orders.
