>> Holy Cross Star Commits

Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, senior varsity baseball player Joe Reed has committed to continue his career at the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx. The College of Mount St. Vincent Dolphins play in the Division III Skyline Conference and tallied a 21-13 record through their first 34 games this season.


>> Valvano Honored

Coach Jim Valvano, a product of St. Leo’s Elementary School, Corona, who led the N.C. State Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA national championship, was named to the 2023 Class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as the Contributor Committee enshrinee. The ceremony takes place in Springfield, Mass., on Aug. 12.


>> Mother’s Day Spotlight

For Mother’s Day, we highlight Cathy Quinn, (photo below) assistant varsity basketball coach at The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates. Quinn has taught and coached fitness for 35 years, while also coaching Catholic Youth Organization basketball and softball at St. Mel, Flushing, and Our lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside.

At St. Agnes H.S., College Point, Quinn coached softball and won two junior varsity championships. She is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. She is also the co-ed cross-country coach at Holy Cross H.S., Flushing. As a mom, Quinn raised six children – all of whom played sports in the CHSAA and GCHSAA.
