>> Claxton Extended by Hofstra

Speedy Claxton, a graduate of Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, recently was named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year after guiding the Hofstra University men’s basketball team to a 24-8 regular season record. He also agreed to a multiyear contract extension to continue leading the Pride.


>> Boys’ High School Hoops Champs

The following boys’ diocesan high school basketball teams won their respective city championships:

Junior Varsity ‘AA’: Christ the King H.S., Middle Village

Junior Varsity ‘A’: Nazareth H.S., East Flatbush

Freshman ‘A’: Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst

Varsity ‘B’: Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge


>> Cheering for States

Several GCHSAA diocesan cheerleading squads competed Feb. 18 in the state championships held at Hofstra University, Hempstead, L.I.

The Mary Louis Academy, (above) Jamaica Estates, junior varsity team won the small invitational state championship, while the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, (below) varsity squad took home second place in the state among small varsity teams.
