>> St. John’s Special Patches

The St. John’s University, Jamaica, baseball team members are wearing “JK” uniform patches this season to honor Jack Kaiser, who died on May 25 at the age 95. Kaiser became head baseball coach in 1956 and won 367 games. He later became a foundational figure in the school’s sports program during his time as athletic director.


> Girls CYO Hoops Champs

Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, was the site of the 2022- 2023 Catholic Youth Organization girls’ basketball diocesan championships.

Here are this year’s title winners:

Pee Wee: St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor

Novice: St. Francis de Sales

Bantam: St. Adalbert, Elmhurst

Rookie: St. Bernard, Mill Basin

Intermediate: St. Mary Winfield, Woodside

Intermediate Developmental: American Martyrs, Bayside


>> Hoops Honors

During the CHSAA boys’ basketball Brooklyn- Queens championship on Feb. 28, two locals were honored.

Before the game, longtime Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and CHSAA referee Phil McBride took part in a ceremonial jump ball to mark his 50 years of service – with this being his final season.

At halftime, former St. Ann’s, Flushing, CYO and Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, star Jose Alvarado had his Royals number retired. He’s currently a member of the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.
