A number of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers have ties to the diocesan parishes that make up the Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens:
Al and Dick McGuire – St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor
Billy Cunningham – St. Rose of Lima, Parkville
Lenny Wilkens – Holy Rosary, Bedford-Stuyvesant
Chris Mullin – St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands
Rick Pitino and Bob Cousy – Sacred Heart, Cambria Heights
Bernard King – St. James Pro Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn
Dick Bavetta – St. Saviour, Park Slope
Lou Carnesecca – Holy Family, Fresh Meadows
Mary Misfud, a senior midfielder and four-year starter on the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, girls’ varsity soccer team, is staying in the diocese to continue the next phase of her soccer career at St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, Clinton Hill. She helped lead the Crusaders to back-to-back GCHSAA diocesan championships.
