Malik Cole, a senior on the St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, varsity basketball team, had committed to Western Connecticut State University, Danbury. The two-year varsity starter averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game during his junior season.
The St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, Clinton Hill, softball team earned several Skyline Conference honors. Junior Ashleigh Hartwig was named Skyline Softball Player of the Year for the second-straight year, and classmate Alexis Buchanan joins her on the All-Skyline First Team. Sophomores Sierra Bedrin and Nicole Trani were named to the All-Skyline Second Team.
After 39 seasons – including 33 as head coach – St. John’s University, Jamaica, track and field/cross-country coach Jim Hurst has announced his retirement. He’s the longest tenured head coach in school history.
Hurt came to Queens as the cross-country and assistant track and field coach in 1982 before being promoted to head coach in 1988. His student-athletes appeared in NCAA championships for 29 consecutive years, in 17 USA national championships and in five USA Olympic trials while winning 36 Metropolitan Conference titles.
