Sports Round-Up July 3-10

The Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, varsity handball team was crowned this spring’s CHSAA city champions.


“Disco” Dom Scala will be honored with the 2021 Italian-American Baseball Foundation Achievement Award at a ceremony in December. Scala grew up in Williamsburg and attended Annunciation Elementary School there. He played Catholic Youth Organization sports at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Williamsburg. From there, it was on to St. Francis Prep, Williamsburg, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He took his baseball talents to St. John’s University, Jamaica, and later served as the New York Yankees bullpen catcher from 1978 through 1986. He is the former head baseball coach at Adelphi University, Garden City, L.I.


Longtime former coach at Cathedral Prep and Seminary, Elmhurst, Jim Dilg was honored at the school’s 28th annual Cathedral Prep Golf Classic at the North Hills Country Club, Manhasset, L.I.

GCHSAA Spring Season Wrap-Up

Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, finished as runners-up in the Tier 1 varsity softball city championship, falling to Moore Catholic H.S., Staten Island. In varsity Tier 2, St. John’s Prep, Astoria, fell to Msgr. Scanlan H.S., the Bronx, for the city title. Tier 3 varsity saw Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, defeat Cathedral Academy, Manhattan, for the city crown.

In GCHSAA lacrosse, Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, fell to Kennedy Catholic H.S., Somers, N.Y., in the ‘AA’ city championship game. In varsity ‘A’ action, The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, defeated Cardinal Spellman H.S., the Bronx, for the city title.
