Sports Round-Up, Jan. 9

Three new records were set at this year’s Catholic Youth Organization boys’ swim Olympics:

Matthew Beehler from STORM, a combined team from Blessed Trinity, Breezy Point; Resurrection, Gerritsen Beach; and St. Mark, Sheepshead Bay, broke a 36-year-old record in the Bantam 25-Yd. Backstroke with a time of 14.39. He now holds records in both the Novice and Bantam Backstroke.

Christopher Lai from OLAN, a combined team from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, and St. Andrew the Apostle, Bay Ridge, set a new mark in the Junior 50-Yd. Freestyle at 25.18. The record has stood for 31 years.

The St. Sebastian, Woodside, relay team of Konrad Bzikot, Kevin Szymczuk, Kevin Zahariev and Derrick Chia broke the record in the Junior 100-Yd. Freestyle by over a minute. The previous mark was set by St. Sebastian in 2011.

The athletic department at St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, presented the fourth annual Jose Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship to junior Kaelyn Edwards.

Edwards, a resident of Gerritsen Beach, is a four-sport standout for the Lady Eagles. She plays soccer, basketball, softball and swims for the school.

The scholarship, awarded to a member of the junior class, keeps alive the memory of Jose Rodriguez, a student at St. Edmund who collapsed and died shortly after completing junior varsity basketball tryouts in November, 2011.

Edwards maintains a 95 average and is a frequent volunteer for the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.

She joins William Halstead (2012), Nina DiCioccio (2013) and Michael John (2014) as recipients of the scholarship.
