The first-ever Msgr. John J. Brown Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament wrapped up Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with some exciting hoops taking center court at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands.

In the championship game, James Madison H.S., Homecrest, defeated runner-up Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 55-33. Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, finished fourth, while St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, came in seventh.

The tournament, which is the girls’ version of the classic Msgr. King Tournament, was recently renamed in honor of the parish’s late pastor, Msgr. John Brown.

Catholic Youth Organization boys’ Rookie basketball teams from St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, and St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, enjoyed the thrill of a lifetime: playing on the court at Madison Square Garden, the world’s most famous arena.

The teams played a scrimmage during halftime of one of the games of the 2017 Under Armour Reunion tournament, featuring college basketball teams from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.; Temple University, Philadelphia; Texas Tech University, Lubbock; and the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
