>> Konchalski Honored at Mass

The Thomas C. Konchalski Foundation, named for the late longtime local basketball scout, held a special Mass in Tom’s honor on his birthday, Sunday, Jan. 8, at Ascension Church, Elmhurst. The church is located two doors down from the Konchalski home, where Tom and his brother Steve grew up.


>> RIP Mike Keilty

The diocesan sports community mourns the loss of Mike Keilty, former men’s basketball standout at St. John’s University, Jamaica. He was 71.

The guard played three seasons for the Johnnies from 1969-1972. His basketball journey started in the Catholic Youth Organization for St. Sebastian parish, Woodside.


>> 1,000 Points

Rob Higgins, a senior guard on the St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, men’s basketball team, became the 34th player in program history to break the 1,000-career- point mark when he accomplished the feat on Dec. 22.

The Terriers defeated Medgar Evers College, Crown Heights, 89-66.


>> CYO Records Fall

The Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens recently held its annual boys’ swimming Olympics.

Three records fell – all set by AOK, the combined team from St. Kevin, Flushing; St. Anastasia, Douglaston; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside; and Sacred Heart, Bayside.

+ The Junior 100-yard Freestyle Relay broke a seven-year record by more than three seconds with a time of 48.42.

+ The Senior 200-yard Freestyle Relay broke a five-year record with a time of 1:37.39.

+ The Senior 200-yard Medley Relay broke a 14-year record with a time of 1:47.68.
