St. John’s University, Jamaica, head women’s basketball coach Joe Tartamella has become the all-time winningest coach in program history. With an 83-63 victory over Xavier University on Feb. 2, the Red Storm captured the 177th victory in Tartamella’s 10th season – moving him past his mentor and former Johnnies head coach Kim Barnes Arico, who tallied 176 career wins.
Attention local student-athletes! The Colgate Women’s Games – the nation’s largest track series for girls – is returning this spring for the 47th season and is open to young female athletes from Brooklyn and Queens. The Games have produced 29 Olympians, have trained hundreds of national champions, and have changed countless lives.
Girls grades one through college from up and down the East Coast compete for more than 100 educational scholarships, awarded each year by long-time sponsor Colgate-Palmolive. The free competition has helped tens of thousands of girls pay for college and start successful careers.

Lending a Helping Hand
Our local CHSAA stands for the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect. This was evident during a recent freshmen basketball game between St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, and Xavier H.S., Manhattan, in Brooklyn.
St. Edmund had been using its gymnasium to conduct large-scale testing during midterm week, with lots of desks set up in the gym. After the game, the Xavier players and spectators noticed St. Edmund’s staff start to set up the desks again for testing and immediately offered a helping hand.
“In a world, where we only see the negatives get reported and sensationalized, it was so incredible to see people just helping because they wanted to help,” said Brian P. Wagner, managing director at St. Edmund’s.
