Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, senior pitcher Jordan Sanabria will continue his baseball career at Queens College, Flushing. As a junior, he recorded a 4-1 record with a 2.10 ERA en route to being selected as a Tablet All-Star.


Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene, head boys’ basketball coach Edwin Gonzalez is recovering after losing consciousness during a one of his team’s games in early December. Acting head coach Tony Chiles said doctors are confident that Gonzalez will make a full recovery.


As part of its annual winter tradition, Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, hosted the 38th Brother Arnold Memorial Basketball Tournament Dec. 6-7.

The Crusaders boys’ team took home the championship title with a 60-47 victory over the Academy of American Studies, Long Island City. Senior guard Joseph Medina led the way with 25 pts. and was named tournament MVP.

Senior guard Omar Diplan and senior forwards Uriah Ladson and Ernest Parada Jr. were selected to the All Tournament Team.

On the girls’ side, the Crusaders opened the tournament with a 58-26 win over Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge. Playing without standout senior guard Catherine Finnerty in the championship, the team fell 56-52 in overtime to Kennedy Catholic, Somers, N.Y.

Sophomore guard Hannah Finnerty led all scorers in the tournament with 39 total points and was named to the All Tournament Team along with senior forward Priscilla Esteves.

The tournament honors the memory of Brother Arnold Bakutis, S.C., a former athletic director and physical education chairman as well as a teacher at Msgr. McClancy who was instrumental in the development of the school’s athletics program.

Sadly, Brother Arnold died of a heart attack while jogging on the school track on May 22, 1980, at the age of 55. To honor him, former Crusaders varsity boys’ head basketball coach Don Kent started the tournament 37 years ago.
