Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, finished as the runner-up in the CHSFL varsity ‘A’ division football championships game, losing 20-18 to Cardinal Spellman H.S., the Bronx in the city title game.
The Clippers entered the game as the top seed, having compiled an 8-1 regular season record. The team defeated St. Dominic’s H.S., Oyster Bay, L.I., 26-22, in the playoff semifinal round.
Trailing 14-0 at halftime, Xaverian – who defeated Cardinal Spellman for the CHSFL ‘A’ title in 2015 – cut the deficit to two points following touchdowns by junior running back Roberto Auguste and sophomore running back Thomas Resker.
In thrilling fashion, the Clippers took the lead 18-14 with 2:55 remaining in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback James Resker hit senior tight end Tim McCabe on a 94-yd. touchdown strike.
Cardinal Spellman though punched in a one-yd. touchdown with 25 seconds remaining to avenge two regular season losses at the hands of Xaverian.
Kyle Schaefer, a senior catcher on the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, varsity baseball team, has signed on to continue his playing career at Marshall University in Huntington, W.V.
As a junior, the 2017 Tablet All-Star batted .336 with six doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs. He also threw out 70 percent of attempted base stealers to cement his place on the CHSAA All-League First Team.
The diocesan high schools were well-represented when the CHSAA took on the Public Schools Athletic League in the annual boys’ and girls’ Mayor’s Cup matches, played at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University, Jamaica.
Representatives on the girls’ squad included seniors Christine Pierre (St. Agnes H.S., College Point), Katherine Ritter (The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates), Genesis Campos (Christ the King H.S., Middle Village), Katherine Marquardt (Fontbonne Hall Bay Ridge), Amanda Martinez (St. John’s Prep, Astoria), Sophia Mellace (St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay) and Jessica Ehret (Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst).
On the boys’ team were seniors Rosario Troia (Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood), Matthew Araujo (Archbishop Molloy), Thomas Mangin (Archbishop Molloy), Matthew Shneyderman (Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge), Sebastian Kuba (Holy Cross H.S., Flushing), Shawn Chacko (St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows) and Jesus Perez (Christ the King).
Sydnei Alleyne, a senior guard on the Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene, girls’ basketball team, signed a National Letter of Intent for an athletic scholarship to Bloomfield College, an NCAA Division II program in New Jersey.
Alleyne is also a member of the school’s track team. The 17-year-old intends to study biology in college.
“I know things will never be handed to me, and even when I’m on top, I can’t diminish my effort but expand it,” the five-foot, seven-inch guard said.
“I know there is never a limit or cap to what I can do. If I keep working, my skill and game will keep growing.”
