Playing for a Cause

The 3-on-3 By the Sea basketball tournament is back for its sixth year in Rockaway Beach. The tournament, a fundraiser for breast cancer research, will take place Saturday, Sept. 7 in the schoolyard of St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Clare Droesch Scholarship Fund. Droesch, a former standout guard on the Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, girls’ varsity basketball team, died in May 2018 at the age of 36 after a more than six-year battle with breast cancer.

St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, celebrated the 35th anniversary of its summer classic basketball tournament — a tradition in the Rockaways.

A fixture each summer in the parish’s schoolyard, the tournament began as a series of pickup games in the mid-1980s. The classic has since grown to one of the largest basketball series in NYC.
