St. Joseph’s College, Clinton Hill, has two new coaches.

The school named Adam Brunengo as its new head men’s soccer coach. He is set to become the third head coach in program history.

For the past nine years, Brunengo was the head varsity boys’ soccer coach at Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst. While there, he led the Crusaders to five CHSAA ‘A’ division city championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014).

He also played soccer at Msgr. McClancy H.S. and graduated as the program’s career leader in assists. As a player, his team won the CHSAA city title in 2000. He went on to play two years of collegiate soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas, Sparkill, N.Y., and finished up his playing career at C.W. Post, Brookville, L.I.

A resident of Forest Hills, Brunengo will continue teaching Spanish at Msgr. McClancy. The Bears open the fall season on Sept. 1.

Matt Rogers

St. Joe’s also appointed Matt Rogers to lead the swimming program. He brings with him over 17 years of coaching experience to Brooklyn.

He coached in the CHSAA as an assistant at Chaminade H.S., Mineola, L.I.,  2001-2012. Since 2005, Rogers has been an assistant coach at the Long Island Swim Express Club, a competitive swimming program ranked among the top 50 of U.S.A. Swimming.

The Bears begin the 2018-2019 swimming campaign on Oct. 13.


The Catholic Youth Organization wrapped up its fifth annual summer basketball league. The league provides girls’ and boys’ basketball players from third through eighth grade the opportunity to keep their skills sharp in preparation for the winter season.

The championship rounds were held Aug. 1-2 at Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst. The following teams won their respective titles.

Girls

Pee Wee: St. Joseph, Astoria

Bantam: Our Lady of Hope, Middle Village

Intermediate: St. Matthias, Ridgewood

Boys

Pee Wee: St. Joseph

Bantam: St. Helen, Howard Beach

Intermediate: St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights

High School: St. Helen
