Sister ‘Tesa’ Wins National Prize

Sister Teresa “Tesa” Fitzgerald, a Sister of St. Joseph from Brentwood, L.I., who directs the Hour Children program that helps women in prison and former women inmates as well as their children, has won the 2014 Opus Prize for faith-based humanitarian work.

With the honor comes $1 million that she said will go to provide more housing for those served by her organization.

“We are really in need of additional living space where we can welcome women from prison for the opportunity to reunite with their children. That’s a real thing. The money would be used for the acquisition of an additional site,” she said.
