Sister Rosemary Gillen, O.P.

Sister Rosemary Gillen, O.P., a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 75 years, died July 27. She was 94 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, she was raised in St. Thomas the Apostle parish, Woodhaven. She received the habit and the name Sister Mary Callista on Aug. 4, 1941.

She taught at St. Barbara, Bushwick, 1941-48; St. Fidelis, College Point, 1948-59; St. Bartholomew’s, Elmhurst, 1959-62; Our Lady of Lourdes, Massapequa Park, L.I., 1962-70; Notre Dame, New Hyde Park, L.I., 1970-80; and St. Catherine of Sienna, Franklin Square, L.I., 1980-97.

In 1997, she retired and moved to Our Lady of Consolation Convent, Amityville, where her ministry became intercessory prayer.  One year later, she came to the Motherhouse in Amityville, first living in Rosary Hall then, as her health deteriorated, to Carlin Hall.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sister Anne Gillen, O.P. Burial was in Amityville.
