Sister Mary Teresa McCaffrey, O.Ss.R.

Sister Mary Teresa McCaffrey, O.Ss.R., 87, a member of the Redemptoristine community for 65 years, died on Dec. 9, at Lourdes Health Care Center, Wilton, Conn.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., in 1947. After professing vows in 1949 as Sister Teresa Miriam she taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, and St. Mary, Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst.

After 12 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, she entered the contemplative monastic order of the Redemptoristine Nuns, in Esopus, N.Y.

At the time, the order was a young community creating a new monastic foundation on the grounds of Mt. St. Alphonsus Redemptorist Major Seminary. She professed vows in 1961 as Sister Mary Teresa of the Holy Family.

Despite increasing physical infirmity in middle age, she served as Council Secretary for numerous terms, presided over the monastery library. The lay associates of the monastery also benefitted from her direction.

She is survived by her brothers, Daniel and Gerard, and a sister, Kathleen Janny. Burial was in the cemetery at the former Mt. St. Alphonsus.
