Sister Marietta Was Principal For 18 Years in Rego Park

Sister Marietta Joseph Mackin, S.C., a member of the Sisters of Charity for 68 years, died Nov. 18, at Cabrini of Westchester, Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was 92.

Born as Mary Anne in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, she attended St. Benedict School, Bronx, and Cathedral H.S., Manhattan, before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from St. John’s University and a master’s in education from Fordham University. She later earned NYS permanent certification in math as well as in school administration and supervision.

After first profession, she was missioned to St. Joseph Hall, Willoughby Ave., Brooklyn. There she served as group mother for 15 years. In 1961, she began her ministry in education.

She was principal of Our Lady of the Angelus School, Rego Park, from 1979 to 1997.

In retirement, she served as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Yonkers. She moved to Mount St. Vincent Convent in 2000, and in 2014 she was among the first group of Sisters to move to the New Jewish Home, Assisted Living Program (ALP), in the Bronx.

Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
