Sister Marie Leonilde

Sister Marie Leonilde LaPointe, O.P., who recently celebrated her 75th year as a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, died Sept. 28. She was 93 years old.

Born as Gervaise, her family lived in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. A few years later they moved to the United States to Franklin Square, L.I.

After completing high school at the Dominican Juniorate in Water Mill, she entered the Congregation at Amityville and received the habit and her religious name on Aug. 7, 1944.

She taught at St. Margaret, Middle Village, 1944-51; St. Patrick, Bay Ridge, 1951-53; and Corpus Christi, Mineola, 1953-62.

She left teaching because of failing hearing and she moved to St. Joseph, Sullivan County where, in 1964, she was appointed postmistress. In 1981, she moved to Maria Regina Hall in Rockville Centre and was the postmistress at Molloy College. She retired in 2008 and in 2013 came to Carlin Hall at Queen of the Rosary Motherhouse.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Sister Edith, OP, (formerly Sister Marie Hilaire) and Leonilde and by her brother, Gregoire.

Interment was in the Sisters’ cemetery in Amityville.
