Sister Laurette Rita Wieman, C.S.J.

Sister Laurette Rita Wieman, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 72 years, died suddenly in Sacred Heart Convent on March 22.

She entered the congregation in 1946 from St. Pascal Baylon parish, St. Albans. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from St. John’s University, a master’s from Manhattan College and a master of business administration in controllership from St. John’s University.

Locally, she taught at St. Michael, Brooklyn, 1948-50; St. Anthony of Padua, Greenpoint, 1950-51; Holy Cross, Flatbush, 1951-53; Queen of All Saints, Fort Greene, 1953-54; and St. Stanislaus, Maspeth, 1954-58.

In Puerto Rico, she taught at Academia Santa Monica, Santurce, 1958-60; Academia San Jorge, Santurce, 1960-64 and 1968-70; and Academia Maria Reina, Rio Piedras, 1974-77. She was principal of Academia San Jose, San German, 1979-80, and Academia Santa Maria, Ponce, 1967-68.

She also taught at St. Angela Hall Academy H.S., Clinton Hill, 1964-67; Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead, 1970-74; and Academy of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1977-79.

She was the fiscal adviser for community schools, Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1980-83; Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1983-87; Christian Brothers Investment Service, New York, 1987-88; Daughters of Wisdom Treasurer, Islip, L.I., 1988-93; and Sacred Heart Academy, 1994-2018.

Her artistic talent was often displayed in stained-glass pieces, which she designed for congregational purposes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Maria Regina Chapel. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
