Obituary: Sister Eileen McCann, C.I.J.

Sister Eileen McCann, C.I.J., a member of the Congregation of the Infant Jesus (Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor), died in late August.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the congregation from St. Rose of Lima parish, Parkville, in 1940. She trained as a registered laboratory technician and served at Mercy Hospital, Rockville Centre, L.I., 1943 to 1959. She earned her nurse’s license at St. Clare’s Hospital, Manhattan.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Jogues, she ministered to the sick poor in their homes in Brooklyn and Queens, serving in the Nursing Sisters Home Visiting Service from 1962 to 1998. When she retired, she volunteered at Mercy Medical Center.

She was also the school nurse in Bishop Reilly H.S., Fresh Meadows; Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica; and Christ the King H.S. Middle Village, from 1965 to 1968.

She was a local superior for the community at St. Joseph’s Convent, Long Island City, and St. Agnes Villa in Hampton Bays, L.I.

She is survived by one brother, Joseph McCann.

Burial was in Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, L.I..
