Sister Eileen Elizabeth Barden, C.S.J. a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 62 years, died at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, Jan. 3.

She attended St. Matthew’s School and Bishop McDonnell M.H.S., both Crown Heights, before entering the congregation in 1956 from Sacred Heart parish in Glendale.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education/theology from Brentwood College. At St. Michael’s College, Colchester, Vt., she earned her master’s in theology, 1977, and a certificate of advanced study in spirituality/Scriptures, 1985. She earned her master’s degree in education and administration from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico in 1993.

Formerly Sister Mary Una, she taught at St. Cecilia, Greenpoint, 1959-65, and Sacred Heart, North Merrick, L.I., 1965-66.

In 1966, she responded to the congregation’s invitation to go to Puerto Rico, where she ministered for 30 years. She taught in Colegio Santa Teresita in Ponce, 1966-69; Academia San Luis San Blas in Lajas, 1969-77, and the Vicariate Rio Piedras (religious education), 1977-87.

She served as principal of the Colegio Santa Teresita, 1987-92, and coordinator of catechetics for the Diocese of San Juan, 1992-95. In addition to community service and a position on the board of directors for Centro San Francisco in Ponce, she was also responsible for the formation of deacons.

When she returned to New York, she continued her ministry at St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, 1995-2007, and Maria Regina Residence, 2016-17.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Maria Regina Chapel, Jan. 8. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
