I live in Brooklyn and serve as a missionary with the Shalom Catholic Community in New York, specifically in Williamsburg — a neighborhood where young adults come to party, hang out, go to the gym, enjoy the waterfront, grab good coffee, and savor great food. They have a lot to enjoy!
But as a Catholic missionary living here for four years, I often ask myself: What about the Church? Is the Church reaching these young people? If not, why not? Every day, I see people longing for the life of Christ, though they don’t realize they are thirsty for him. And many times, I ask myself: What about me? Do I truly believe that Christ is alive, healing, sending his spirit to transform the world, and softening my heart?

In the midst of New York’s magnificence, do I really believe that Jesus is the greatest novelty, the most beautiful one who surpasses all?
In prayer and adoration, my heart is filled with the freshness of his love. There, I receive the grace that delivers me from my weaknesses. His grace sustains me, teaching me how to love and how to proclaim His life through my actions, my gaze, my words, my time, and the way I welcome others — especially those who come to a church for the first time.
But how can I have a gaze, a smile, a gesture that is Christ-like?
We imitate those we spend time with; friends begin to speak and act alike simply by being together. With Christ, it’s the same. If I want him in my life and to give him to others, I must remain with him, for we cannot give what we do not have.
Each day is filled with moments of prayer: two hours before the Blessed Sacrament; morning, evening, and night prayer; prayer before meals and before our apostolic work. Everything is given by God. I pray to remain grateful. All is for His glory, and we trust the Holy Spirit to continue working powerfully among us.

Afternoons and evenings are dedicated to evangelization — what a joy to share the Gospel with young adults! We invite them to prayer groups, service projects, retreats, sports, and Mass. Many receive one-on-one spiritual companionship — men with men, women with women — growing in grace as they share their struggles and joys.
We’ve also opened SH NY Space, a cozy workspace and café for young adults, open from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. It’s a creative place to relax, grab coffee, and talk about life — and Christ.
Christ is alive! Not just as a truth to know, but as a love to experience.
With God’s grace, may we grow in sensitivity toward others and evangelize with meekness and joy. We all need Jesus!
