Retired Incardinated Priest Dies at 82 in Sri Lanka

Father Joachim B. Fernando, an incardinated priest of the Brooklyn Diocese, died Oct. 22 in Sri Lanka. He was 82.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Sunday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Pius X Church, Rosedale. Father Jean Miguel Auguste, pastor, will be the main celebrant.

Born in Negombo, Sri Lanka, he was educated in schools there and attended the Universita Urbaniana in Rome.

He was ordained in Sri Lanka on Aug. 31, 1962. He served in various assignments there until 1980 when he came to the U.S.

He served as an assistant at St. James, Setauket, in the Rockville Centre Diocese from 1980 to 1986, and then in the Brooklyn Diocese at St. Malachy, East New York, 1986-90; and St. Pius X, Rosedale, 1990-2006.

He was incardinated as a priest of the Brooklyn Diocese in 1989.

He retired for medical reasons in 2006. He remained in residence at St. Pius X for four years and then returned home to live in Sri Lanka.
