Queens Native Marks 70th Year in Maryknoll

Sister Helen Dorothy Phillips, M.M., photo library manager for Maryknoll Sisters and missioner-educator to Bolivia, celebrated 70 years with Maryknoll Sisters at a Mass for  Maryknoll Sisters marking 60, 70 and 75 years with the congregation on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossinning, N.Y.

Seven Sisters celebrated 70 years; six marked 60 years; and two, 75 years.

Born in Hollis, Sister Helen entered Maryknoll in 1944 from Incarnation parish, Queens Village, and made her final vows on March 7, 1950.

Sister Helen first worked in the congregation’s kitchen in Venard, Pa.,  in 1947, then its residence in Valley Park, Mo., from 1947-48, where she also taught Gregorian Chant. She also worked in the kitchen and taught catechetics at the congregation’s residence in Mountain View, Calif., from 1949 to 1953.

She taught catechetics in Stockton, Calif., 1953-55; in Houston, 1955-56; and Guadelupe, Calif., 1956-57.

Following completion of her bachelor’s degree, she was missioned in Peru and Bolivia, from 1961 to 1975.

In 1975, she returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Center, where she worked in the promotion department, speaking at churches and parish schools until 1979, then served as coordinator of the center, 1979-82.

In September, 1982, she was appointed secondary education coordinator of the National Office of the Propagation of the Faith, Manhattan, where she served until 1989. She then worked in Nigeria, Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand and Bolivia.
