Only in Print: Altar Bread a Labor of Love For Carmelite Nuns

HIGHLAND PARK — Almost every day, the Discalced Carmelite nuns at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Joseph roll up their sleeves to bake their made-to-order altar bread.

Although they have a vow of poverty and depend on alms for their sustenance, the religious order’s Holy Rule states the nuns should also do manual labor and help themselves through the work of their hands …
