Most of us in the DeSales Media office are still catching our breaths after the whirlwind that was April. First, there was Bishop Ed Scharfenberger’s installation in Albany, N.Y. Then, we moved right into Holy Week and Easter coverage. Finally, there was the canonization of the two 20th-century popes.
This is no time for a vacation. Coming up are several more weeks of fast-paced activities that you do not want to miss. Here’s a preview of what we’ll be doing in May.
This coming Tuesday evening, May 13, we will be broadcasting live on NET-TV the rededication of the altar and official blessing of St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, Prospect Heights. You’ve been reading all about the restoration work that has been going on at the co-cathedral, and now you will be able to get your first look at the results. I had a sneak preview last week, and the 100-year-old church is magnificent. The artwork is eye-catching. The Marian murals in the rondellos alone are worth your time to pay a visit.
But there is so much more to see at our new co-cathedral. The coats of arms of all eight of the ordinary bishops of Brooklyn are emblazoned along the upper right side of the church above the center aisle. The unique pulpit has been restored to its original beauty. A cathedra – the bishop’s chair – has been installed. And the organ is now in full working condition.
Tune in to our coverage, and then make a date with a friend to come to Downtown Brooklyn and explore this historic church. It’s walking distance from the busy Barclays Center transportation hub, so there’s no excuse for not being able to get there.
The following week, DeSales is hosting a visit from Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, the president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications at the Vatican. He will be the main speaker at our observance of World Communications Day at the Brooklyn Marriott. This will be an important talk by a key Church leader. We will bring you full coverage on Currents, our evening news show, and in The Tablet.
From May 24 to 26, Pope Francis will be visiting the Holy Land with stops in Israel and Jordan. Again, NET-TV will take you there with live coverage of the events as they happen, along with commentary from local guests in our studios in Brooklyn. We’re still working on the schedule for this significant journey to the Middle East and will have more details in future editions of The Tablet.
In between, we’re also working on observances of diocesan priests, brothers and sisters jubilees. These men and women have labored in the diocesan vineyard – some for more than 50 years – and they deserve our attention as they recall the days when they entered their ministries and took on lives of service. Next week, we will tell you about the celebrations for our priests. Sisters and brothers will appear in a subsequent issue.
So, you’re all caught up now on what we’ll be doing in the next few weeks to keep you informed about the Church in Brooklyn and Queens and how we fit into the universal Church. As we get closer to summer, we’ll be telling you about our special project to commemorate the 1964-1965 World’s Fair and also be highlighting some of the books you will be reading this summer.
So, buckle your seatbelts. I’m hoping it will not be a bumpy ride. But with so much live action, there is always the unpredictable factor. Stay tuned, and keep reading.
